KASPA Coin: The Fastest Open-Source Scalable Layer-1 Network

A lot of new projects continue entering the digital crypto space. One of them is Kaspa, a digital ledger enabling parallel blocks and instant transaction confirmation. According to its website, ‘Kaspa is a community project – completely open source with no central governance – following in the ethos of coins like Bitcoin, Litecoin, or Monero.’ Kaspa’s mainnet was launched in early November 2021 and has been a popular choice for investments. Let’s take a closer look at the Kaspa crypto and its properties.

What Does Kaspa Crypto Do?

Kaspa (KAS) is a Proof-of-Work (PoW) Layer-1 cryptocurrency that uses the PHANTOM GhostDAG system to immediately confirm transactions. Kaspa is a 100% community-owned project created by DAGlabs. The founder of Kaspa is Dr. Yonatan Sompolinsky, who set up DAGlabs, where his advisor, Prof. Aviv Zohar, assisted him in inventing the PHANTOM GhostDAG protocol.

Instead of storing digital transactions in blocks, the mathematical structure of a directed acyclic graph (DAG) substitutes blocks with ‘vertices,’ using ‘edges’ to refer individual vertices to each other for validation. The validation of subsequent transactions is accomplished through the combination of "parent" transactions. This eliminates orphaned data blocks, which can compromise security and reduce scalability. Kaspa heavily relies on blockDAG, rather than blockchain technology. This allows the network to operate at a TPS equivalent of one block per second, giving it speed and tremendous security without sacrificing decentralization. At the moment TPS is in the range of 200 to 250 transactions depending on the data size.

Kaspa's open-source, highly scalable design is based on the Nakamoto consensus, the BFT protocol developed by Bitcoin's inventor in 2009. As a result, Kaspa largely draws from Bitcoin's principles, such as PoW mining, deflationary monetary policy, and a lack of central authority.

The Kaspa implementation includes a slew of cool features and subprotocols, such as the ability to query the DAG's topology, block data pruning (with plans for block header pruning in the near future), SPV proofs, and later subnetwork support, which will make future Layer-2 solution implementation much easier. Kaspa is the fastest (and soon to be even faster) Layer-1 PoW blockchain. The creators' technique appears secure, and the blockchain should have no scaling concerns in the future. Some experts have claimed that they consider Kaspa as the blockchain of the future since the project's inception.

KASPA Features

The network offers the following features:

  1. Fastest transactions. Every second, Kaspa's blockDAG network generates numerous blocks for adding transactions to the ledger. When combined with completely confirmed transactions in 10 seconds, Kaspa is suitable for daily transactions.
  2. Instant confirmation. Kaspa was built to be hundreds of times faster than Bitcoin, with each transaction visible to the network in one second and fully confirmed in 10 seconds on average.
  3. Scalability. With its ability to generate and confirm many blocks per second, Kaspa overcomes the scalability challenge. This has no impact on security or decentralization, as seen with Proof-of-Stake networks.
  4. Efficient Proof-of-Work. For network consensus and security, Kaspa employs the optical-mining ready kHeavyHash algorithm. This technique, paired with high-throughput DAG and no-wasted-blocks, reduces the energy consumption of the network compared to previous PoW networks.
  5. Security. Kaspa employs an ultra-secure block network with no regard for decentralization.  Achieved by pure, stake-free Proof-of-Work and a new GhostDAG Consensus method.
  6. BlockDAG. To solve the blockchain problem, Kaspa processes all blocks in parallel, connecting all side-chains. This results in a DAG structure that dramatically increases the number of blocks formed every second, resulting in a blockDAG.

What Is Kaspa Coin KAS Used For?

As the native cryptocurrency of the Kaspa protocol, KAS powers all network activities, such as transaction costs and developer fees. KAS is also used to reward Kaspa’s mining node operators. The rapid block rates on the platform allow decentralized and profitable mining at a low hash rate.

KAS, like Bitcoin, did not have a pre-mine, an initial coin offering (ICO), or coin allocations. It has a maximum supply of 28.7 billion coins and an emission plan that cuts rewards in half yearly through monthly reductions. It has a total quantity of more than 13 billion coins.

Kaspa's emission timetable states that all of its coins will be mined 15 years after the start of the mainnet, or approximately July 2037.

Kaspa News: Improving Scalability and Speed

The team keeps working on the project to boost its scalability and speed. In May 2023, it released an innovative Alpha update thanks to developer Michael Sutton, who introduced a new Rusty Kaspa feature known as ‘on-the-fly Header Pruning.’ It intends to make the Kaspa network faster, more efficient, and even more attractive to both developers and users that this pruning happens ‘on-the-fly.’ This means the process is continuous and automatic, without any need to pause or restart the system. With this new automatic procedure, the network can stay streamlined and compact, take up less computer space (around 4–6GB in current mainnet settings and transaction throughput), and operate without unnecessary interruptions.

Earlier, Bitget, a crypto exchange consistently ranking in the top 10, listed Kaspa (KAS) on its platform. This listing further diversified Bitget’s extensive range of digital assets and brought new Kaspa trading possibilities for users on the platform. Just recently, the team announced that OneKey wallet had integrated Kaspa into their portfolio.
